Odum Distinguished Research Professor of Sociology, Carolina Population Ctr. Glen H. Elder Jr. In this research, now called life course studies, he has observed and compared people in different birth cohorts over decades of their lives. His work has followed and observed children of the Great Depression through military service in World War II as well as rural farm youth during the economic recessions of the s. A recently completed study follows members of California's generation across the turbulence of s prosperity, the Great Depression, and the economic boom of the War years. Glen Elder's career has focused on understanding the reciprocal influences of changing environments and people's lives through the use of longitudinal samples of individuals and cohort members. Elder, Jr. Each new cohort of graduate students this University, the Department of Sociology, and Faculty at a moment in time. You see the faculty as they are now, and the department in its present state. I would like to add a temporal dimension to your experience by taking you back in time to the beginnings of Sociology at UNC. This, of course, is my view of sociological local history. Another person might well tell a different story. This is the Odum era, an incredibly exciting, risk-filled, and challenging time in the building of this department, of sociology in the South, and of sociology in this country. SOCIOLOGICAL LIVES ACROSS ERAS Two sociological lives connect eras in the department. More recently, he partnered with Rand Conger to conduct a decade-long study of farm families living through the collapse of the agricultural economy in Iowa in the s. In both cases, Elder has driven home the simple but all important idea that our lives are lived in time and place. By contrast, a life course approach locates people in relation to their social pathways, historical time and place. Over the past 40 years, life course theory has contributed to significant advances in biographical methods and research.
